In June 2024, the fifteenth Workshop on Matrices and Operators was held at the Â鶹ӰÊÓ, Reno, marking the first time the event was held outside of Asia. The workshop brought together mathematicians from around the world to explore the latest developments in matrix and operator theory, branches of mathematics focused on structured sets of numbers and their transformations.
The workshop was organized by faculty from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, including Valentin Deaconu, Alex Kumjian, Pan Shun Lau, and Tin-Yau Tam, in collaboration with Chi-Kwong Li from the College of William & Mary. Approximately 30 participants attended, including 18 invited speakers who are recognized experts in the field of matrices and operators.
“This was a wonderful opportunity to bring together leading researchers and rising scholars in a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment,” Tam said. “It was also a great chance for our students to engage with international experts and see firsthand how mathematics evolves through research and dialogue.”
Along with a full program of talks and discussions, participants enjoyed a conference dinner and an excursion to Lake Tahoe. On the final evening, Tam and his wife Kitty opened their home to attendees for a dinner party.
Established in 2007, the Workshop on Matrices and Operators aims to foster informal yet productive exchanges among researchers by encouraging the sharing of new results, open problems, and emerging ideas. The workshop was on hiatus from 2020 to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, making the 2024 gathering particularly meaningful, Tam said.
Presentation slides from the 2024 workshop, along with additional information, are available on the website. The will be held in Canada.
