Master of Economics Admissions

The minimum requirements for admission into the M.S. program in Economics are:

  • A baccalaureate or advanced degree from an accredited college or university, or its equivalent
  • An overall grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Intermediate Microeconomics or a comparable undergraduate course
  • Intermediate Macroeconomics or a comparable undergraduate course
  • One semester of calculus

Applicants who do not meet these requirements may be admitted with the approval of the Graduate Director. In such cases, they may be required to complete remedial coursework under Graduate Special status before formally entering the M.S. program. Admission is competitive and meeting minimum qualifications is not a guarantee of admission.

Admission Requirements: Accelerated Program

Exceptional undergraduate Economics students at UNR may apply to the accelerated B.A./M.S. or B.S./M.S. program, which allows them to begin graduate-level coursework while completing their bachelor’s degree. Students accepted into the program can take up to 12 credits of 600- or 700-level Economics courses that count toward both their undergraduate and M.S. degrees. Students in the accelerated program typically complete the remaining 18 credits of coursework to obtain their M.S. degree in two semesters. The degree requirements for the accelerated program are the same as those for the standard M.S. program.

UNR students can apply to the accelerated program in their junior year, provided they have:

  • Earned at least 75 credits toward their bachelor’s degree.
  • Completed their General Education and Additional College requirements.
  • Taken at least 18 total credits and 6 upper-division (300 or above) credits in economics.
  • At least 12 credits of economics earned at UNR.
  • Minimum 3.2 GPA.

Students admitted to the accelerated program apply to the M.S. program in economics in their senior year, following the standard application procedure.

For more information on the accelerated program, please see the Economics Department’s Graduate Student Handbook.
